the hypocrisy of Ivy League liberals

Good column by Victor Davis Hanson on how the rhetoric of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton doesn't match up with the reality of the world or even their own lives.

Another Iranian sub-orbital rocket launch

OK, who else besides me thinks that this is really scary news?  If the Iranians develop an atomic bomb they'll have ICBM capability or could potentially explode a nuke over the eastern seaboard and the EMP would cripple half the nation.  If there is any kind of news story that argues against a "President Obama"... this is it.

scary news about boys and young men

I was listening to Coast to Coast AM last night and the guest was a Dr. Leonard Sax who has written a book "Boys Adrift" and he had a pretty scary message. He was outlining how guys are staying with their parents longer, aren't motivated to get into the work force, would rather play video games than study. This problem is getting worse and worse. He also went into how American males aren't going into trades any more. There was some kind of program at a suburban Maryland high school to get kids into plumbing (and Dr. Sax pointed out that plumbers make quite a good living and will never lack for work) and they only got 20 boys to enroll in the program (out of the whole county) and only 4 stuck through the program to the end.

Dr. Sax also echoed the conclusions reached by Mark Steyn in "America Alone" namely that in 50 years Europe will be dominated by Moslems and that the U.S. is likely to be split between Spanish speaking Roman Catholics and English speaking Protestant Evangelicals (because those are the only groups with stable families promoting masculine men and feminine women and having babies).

This story was also the subject of a recent article here that details how different young men of today are from those of 40 years ago.  It isn't a pretty picture.

a glimpse into how the left thinks

I was off at a meeting this past week and most of the folks there were, I'm sure, of the left - leaning persuasion. I was out to dinner one night with some of them and as our group is walking along, I hear a snippet of conversation to the effect of "... so they think that because we haven't had a terrorist attack that that is a good argument". So I sidled up and, against my better judgment asked what they were talking about. I guess the one fellow had been relating the story of being at a dinner where there were some conservatives and the latter had cited the fact that we hadn't had a terrorist attack since 9/11/01 on U.S. soil as being an argument in favor of the success of Pres. Bush's anti-terror policies. He thought that wasn't a good argument. I was kind of incredulous. I was like, well... that is the case isn't it? He admitted it was, but said well we only had one terrorist attack under Pres. Clinton and that was home-grown (Oklahoma City). I said, well what about the Africa embassy bombings? what about the attack on the Kohl? I guess he didn't want to count those. Then he said something to the effect that well, San Francisco hasn't had a super earthquake since 1906 so we shouldn't be worried about another 9/11, like 9/11 was just some freak occurence. Hoo boy.

We dropped it for awhile but got back into it later talking about why conservatives don't like John McCain. He seemed to think that a big reason was because John McCain didn't support the constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. I certainly can't speak for everybody, but that seems to be a really peripheral complaint to me. As the conversation progressed he suggested that all conservatives were basically homophobes because of being against gay marriage. This is the type of stereotype that Rush Limbaugh always talks about and here it was on full display. I tried to explain that one could be against gay marriage and not be a homophobe, but I don't know if I got through.

supporting McCain

There were two interesting columns yesterday. One by Oliver North (here) lays out the case for supporting McCain. Another (here) by Jonah Goldberg talks about why many of the criticisms about John McCain can also, or more properly even, be leveled at George Bush.

the liberal fascists' approach to global warming

I ran across the following on Transterrestrial Musings:

"Apparently, such is the threat from global warming that we'll have to sacrifice democracy on its altar:
[T]he authors conclude that an authoritarian form of government is necessary, but this will be governance by experts and not by those who seek power.

Well, that's a relief."

He got it in turn from Jonah Goldberg's page.

This is really amazing stuff. On Goldberg's page, he quotes the following from a reader:

"You should check out the “Peak Oil” guys. A relative of mine is now into that and lent me a book by a chomskyite professor named Heinberg (Title “The Party’s Over”). Calls for centralized planning right down to local committees to determine when and if you may be allowed to have any children- the national quota of kids allowed being already set by the central command. This wedding of science and pseudo-science to totalitarian socialism is getting weirder and weirder out there and has this millennial cult-feel to it."

I wonder if these liberal fascists ever stop and think about what they're saying?

the mountain stated are dissed again

I'm pretty disappointed with the Super Tuesday results. I had hoped that Mitt Romney would do much better. He did win the Mountain states but all the media basically disregard us here (for instance see Jed Babbin's column where he doesn't even mention Romney's wins in Colorado, Utah and Montana). It perpetually irks me how we are always ignored out here.

Even more distressing than McCain's wins yesterday were the wins in the south by Huck-a-dope. I'll tell you. I could vote for McCain and a reasonable running mate, but if he picks Huck-a-dope as his VP I WILL NOT vote for the vanity ticket. No how, no way.

back from my local caucus

I just got back from my precinct caucus.  Actually there at the library where we were meeting we had 7 precincts meeting there.  It was packed.  There were about 200 people there.  I have to say that the Colorado system is kind of hosed up.  We just had a straw poll there and then elected delegates and alternates for our precincts.  I thought it would be closer, but out of the, I think, 201 people, about 120 were for Mitt Romney, 30 for McCain, 18 or so for Huckabee and the rest for Ron Paul (one for Giuliani (not me... I know its too late for Rudy)).  So the delegates that we elected seemed to be pretty hard-core Romney people, but there's nothing to stop them from switching, at least at this level.  It was interesting though.

The President's proposed 2009 NASA budget

There are a few good stories on the proposed 2009 NASA budget. An overall one here and one more focused on planetary science here. It looks a little grim for Mars exploration :(
It is fairly good for Earth science and lunar science. In a letter to the NASA community, associate administrator for science, Alan Stern, outlined 7 new missions in the proposed budget:

  • The Earth Science Division's SMAP soil moisture mission for launch in 2012 and IceSat II decadal survey mission for launch in 2015. Three additional Earth science decadal survey missions will be enabled by this budget request as well.
  • And two new lunar robotic missions - a small science orbiter to launch by 2011 and a pair of mini-landers for launch by 2014; these lunar missions are to be developed in SMD's Planetary Science Division.
  • The Heliophysics Division's new, lower cost Solar Probe mission for launch in 2015.
  • The Planetary Science Division's long awaited Outer Planets Flagship for launch in 2016 or 2017, depending on the mission target and trajectory.
  • The Astrophysics Division's highly anticipated JDEM dark energy mission for launch by 2015.

Of course this is all subject to how it is deconstructed by the Democrat-controlled congress. We'll see!

Iran launches rocket into Space

Iran has supposedly launched a rocket into space (story here).  I assume this was a sub-orbital launch.  The story says they're working towards launching a satellite soon.  So are they that interested in getting their own communication satellites or working towards the development of ICBMs?  I think it is fairly safe to assume the latter.  So despite what the national intelligence estimate report from last year said, I think only a fool could believe that they're not still working on nuclear weapons.  So if they get a nuclear bomb and have ICBMs all of us infidels here in the U.S. should all be very, very concerned.

Hooray!!!!!  The NY Giants have won the Super Bowl!!!  They've beaten the Patriots!  Amazing, amazing game!  Oh man, what a terrific game!  I have been a Giants fan all my life and this was so fabulous to see.  Maximum kudos to Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning, Plaxico Burress and the whole team.

Ann Coulter has gone insane

This clip from Hannity & Colmes shows Ann Coulter saying that she would vote for Hillary over McCain. I really was irked with her when she was saying "Darwinism is a crock" in her book "Godless". Either she is willfully ignorant or just incredibly misguided on that one, but on this one she is just completely round the bend. I don't like McCain, but with regards to the war in Iraq there is just no contest between him and Hillary.

the case for Mitt Romney by Vin Weber

Column in the Wall Street Journal Online by former congressman Vin Weber on why Mitt Romney is the best choice for the GOP candidate for president. Certainly, he is closest to a true conservative left in the race.

the case against John McCain

Good column by Mark Levin making a case against John McCain.  The guy is to be admired for his service during the Vietnam War and in support of the war in Iraq, but Levin points out a lot of McCain's personality defects as well as his liberal voting record.  This piece by Robert Novak confirms a recent claim made by a reporter that McCain had stated that Supreme Court Justice Alito was "too conservative".  Kind of makes you wonder about the kind of justices that McCain might appoint, doesn't it?  Can you say David Souter?
